For NTP server with GPS time synchronization

The GPS system is a satellite-based navigation system operated by the U.S. Department of Defense. It essentially provides a subscription-free civilian navigation and timing service. GPS is primarily intended as a very accurate global positioning and navigation reference. However, a byproduct of precise positioning, that every orbit satellite has a built-in high precision atomic clock synchronization unit of the U.S. Naval Observatory (USNO). It is therefore for the provision of a high precision time reference for timing ideal computer systems, such as NTP. This article attempts to describe just how network time server can obtain accurate timing information, to provide an accurate reference for computer time synchronization. It will also explain how the NTP server can be generated by GPS atomic time, a timing reference for Offer to use computer networks.

The GPS system is a constellation of 24 satellites in orbit, with high-precision atomic clock at each timing systems onboard. The system offers a global service that will receive anywhere on the face of the planet. The exact time will be continuously transmitted from each satellite. The time information can simply modern low-cost antenna and receiver devices are received.

The time of each satellite broadcast as Universal Coordinated Time (UTC), the virtually identical with the Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). UTC is the same worldwide, it does not vary with time zone or daylight saving time. UTC is a high-precision atomic time standard, the atomic clocks in national Standards laboratories is maintained. UTC has uniform seconds as defined by the International Atomic Time (TAI) Institute.

Each satellite broadcasts time and position information as very low-power radio-frequency transmission. The U.S. military refers to two frequencies, one for civilian use coded L1 and coded for military purposes L2. The L1 frequency is 1575 MHz (1.575 GHz) broadcast. This weak radio transmission can easily pass through less dense materials such as plastics and glass, but are blocked by denser materials such as metal and stone. However, newer more sensitive receiver is designed for indoor use.

A GPS antenna must be a 'line-of-sight "In view of the satellites. Therefore, roof antenna is ideal, with a full 360-degree view of the sky. Often, however, is an antenna on the side of a Building sufficient, unless the horizon is not too much obscured by trees or buildings. The antenna is essentially a signal amplifier, it increases the received signals for transmission over a cable to a receiver. Fifty-ohm coaxial cable typically used to transfer signal information between the antenna and receiver.

The receiver decodes the signals from the antenna into a usable, readable format received. Is the most common protocol used by receivers NMEA, which consists of a number of records transferred. Each NMEA provides a package of information, consisting of time, date and positioning information. The Protocol also additional information such as the visible satellites and satellite orientation in the sky.

NTP servers use a special receiver for timing applications tailored. Timing receivers have additional functions and circuitry to ensure a highly accurate time reference. They also lead an automated Site survey to compare satellite clocks for synchronicity. Time servers also use an accurate pulse per second (PPS) output generated by the receiver. A PPS output provides a highly accurate reference trigger for timing purposes.

The GPS system provides an ideal solution for computer network timing applications. With the "free-to-air" system, NTP Time Server can synchronize within a few microseconds UTC.
